I have been in law Enforcement for 34 years, with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office since
August 1979 as a Detective, Patrol officer and Corrections officer. Prior to that I was an
U.S. Air force Security Policeman from May 1975 until August 1979. I started
investigating fires in May 1985, since that time I have been lead investigator or assisted
in over 2500 fires scenes. Over 50 of these investigations have been fatal fire scene.
Numerous criminal investigations, and testified as an expert witness in state general
session, grand jury, and criminal court and federal criminal and civil courts in arson
cases.
During the pass 24 years I have worked with local, state and federal investigators on a
number of investigations from arson to bombings and murder cases. During this time I
have also served as board member and officer for the Tennessee Advisory Committee
on Arson and the TN Chapter IAAI, and was TN Chapter IAAI President for 2003.
Conducting training at all levels across the state. I have instructed at the Tennessee Law
Enforcement Academy, Tennessee State Fire Academy. I have served as an Adjunct
Instructor for National Fire Academy courses on Arson and Courtroom Testimony. I am
an instructor on Forensic Fire Scene Investigation for the University of Tennessee’s
National Forensic Academy in Knoxville, TN. I have also taught Fire Investigation
classes at seminars in Alaska, Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio and South
Carolina. I have attended the last 6 International Association of Arson Investigators
Annual Training Conferences. In 2007 I was elected to the Board of Directors for the
International Association of Arson Investigators.
I have been involved in over 115 live-fire training exercises with the local fire
departments and training for the Knox County Fire Investigation Task Force. I have
conducted arson training fires at the University of Tennessee, National Forensic
Academy and the State Fire Academy and TN IAAI chapter meetings. In 2000 I started
my own business to teach classes on Fire Investigation and other related fields around
the country. These classes include; Origin and Cause Investigation (Based on NFPA
921), Arson Crime Investigation, and Introduction to Fire Investigation for Fire Officers.
